Here is the first photo in the Michael J. Carroll series from his early days his last in Panama.

The hand writing on the back of this photo says: "Las Cascadas, Canal Zone – 1907 – M.J. Carroll, Fireman, First Job on Canal"

Michael is the man standing center with the white shirt and black hat.  There is an "X" above his head.  He was the fireman on this Bucyrus steam shovel down in the cut.  The buildings seen above are of the town of Cascadas.
