Photo of the Week
October 16, 2011

I don't know how many of you have seen this photo.  It has been circulating via email this past week.  I don't have any information as to who took it, but the email that I received was titled "A few days ago at Gatún".  This is one impressive yet very disturbing aerial photo taken with what appears to be a fish eye camera lens.  Those of you that once lived in Gatun will be disturbed once you fathom what has happened to New Town.  You may remember all the photos circulating on the Internet of part of Gatun's housing getting dismantled, well this is why.  The excavation goes all the way up to the edge of the road across from the Gatun Swimming Pool.  Gatun will surely be an island when all this is done.  Although the fish eye lens makes the old locks appear much smaller, when this project is all over, the old locks will be dwarfed by this new Post Panamax locks.   The red clay makes the earth appear as it is bleeding, but it is just the color balance in the original photo.  I tried to tone it down, but couldn't.
