With all the photos going around on the Internet via email showing the destruction
of New Town in Gatun, I found this photo that was taken by Life Magazine
back in the U.S. Third Locks era. This is a really super photo of
the excavation, damming the lake and notching out the walls for the new
lock gates. This photo must have been taken just prior to the
termination of work when WWII started. The newly constructed New
Town is clearly seen on the banks of the new locks. No wonder ACP
had to remove those houses. I never realize they were so close to
the excavated locks. This is a very good photo and am glad I found
it.
