On January
11, 2009, I posted for my photo of the week the aftermath of the
sinking of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company's steamer Newport at the
Pacific Mail Steamship's wharf in Balboa harbor. That photo
was part of a rather large collection of photos and post cards. I
have since been fortunate to negotiate the purchase of the entire
collection. While categorizing the photos, I found the photo
featured as this week's photo. The photo was evidently taken the
same day as my previous post from January and probably the same
photographer. This is a side view of the sunken ship showing the
large crane laying across the forward section of the ship. You can
see the damage to the wharf when it collapsed. I scanned the photo
in at a high resolution that I unfortunately cannot post on the web
because of size. I was able to read the name Newport on the bow
and also there is a sign on one of the building reading, Pacific Mail
Steamship Co.
