Photo of the Week
March 25, 2007

Another super capture in time for this week's photo.  I recently purchased this old real photo post card because of the historical significance of the subject matter.  Everyone has see the Crane Hercules doing work on the Canal, but this photo is showing the Hercules sister crane Ajax at work. This great snap shot is showing the Ajax hoisting the boom and shovel of either the Dredge Cascadas, Gamboa, or Paraiso.  The boom and shovel must have come loose during digging and had to be recovered by the Ajax.  What would they have done without the Ajax and Hercules to do jobs like this throughout the years.  I would say that his capture in time was not too long after the opening of the Canal as the channel is still rough and narrow.  Could have been one of the on-going slides that happened after flooding of the Cut.
