Photo of the Week
June 12, 2005

Here is another great old black and white photo taken back during the Panama Canal construction days.  Someone wrote on the back of the photo "bachelor quarters".  This was evidently one of the many large wooden bachelor quarters built by the Isthmian Canal Commission for Gold employees.  As you can see, there are several doorways coming out onto the large screened in porch.  This young man is relaxing reading a magazine while sitting in one of the large comfortable rocking chairs.  These chairs were probably issued by the quartermaster office.  When I zoomed into the back cover of the magazine, there is an add for "Post Toasties".  Guess they had that cereal back then too.  Note the pet dish on the floor.  Someone must have had a dog.  What a simple life it must have been back then!
