Gatun Dam is nearly a half a mile wide at the base sloping to a width of 100 feet at the crest which is 105 feet above sea level. The two wings of the dam and the spillway have an aggregate length of about 1 1/2 miles. This is a full spill with all gates open. I have been there when they did this and the water was going over the bridge by the Tarpon Club just at the end of the apron. The white m shape are large round floating buoys being sucked towards the dam's 14 gates. What an incredible force and is something that everyone should see at least once. |
