Photo of the Week
July 16, 2017

Continuing with the Brown collection this week with the Battleship Wisconsin coming back from war and transiting the Panama Canal in early January 1946.  She was in route to Norfolk Naval Shipyard fro an overhaul.  It must have been quite a site to see these giant battleships transiting the Canal and Locks.  Above the Wisconsin is entering Gatun Locks.

Below is a fantastic photo of the Wisconsin in the lock chamber with a good look at the Control House, Light House and building to the left all painted camouflage because of the war.  The normally bright white Control House looks like a burned out building.  I have seen other photos of the lock during WWII where even the tops of the lock walls were painted in camouflage.

More of these mid 40's photos in the coming weeks.
