I
found a stack of 3 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch old black and white photos that I
had purchased years ago and will be posting some of them in the next few
weeks. They appear to be personal photos taken by someone
visiting or living in Panama in the late 1930's - 1940's by look of the
automobiles. I picked this one as a favorite for this week. Many
Zonians will remember this triangular shaped building that was off of
4th of July Ave across from the back gate to Quarry Hts. These
wedge shaped buildings became popular after the Flatiron Building was
built in New York City in 1902. Wedge shaped buildings are ideal
to fill in a triangular parcel to maximize the parcel's usage. I
am not sure what this building's purpose was back then (office building,
hotel, etc.), but the name for fame was the home to Tom Brady's Bar and
Restaurant a famous watering hole for many zonians and military back in
the day. The street going into the city is Calle B which takes you
all the way down to Central Ave. You can see the old trolley
tracks in the street. These tracks used to go all the way into
Balboa. I am not sure if the guy in uniform is a Canal Zone Police
or a Military keeping an eye on the CZ and Panama border (The
Limits). How life was so easy back then and much less traffic of
course.
I
was lucky to find a photo on the Internet of this same area taken by a
Edwin Valencia and embedded in Google Maps with a hot spot. Edwin
named the hot spot Parada El Chorrillo. The old building still
stands after all these years with other buildings gone. Possibly
during Operation Just Cause and a good portion of Chorrillo burned
down. I don't know what time of day or what day this photo
below was taken, but it seems the in-flow of traffic is jammed up.
The last trip to Panama I took the flow towards the bridge was
deadlocked. Took us over two hours to get from Calidonia to the
bridge. I don't want to ever do that again.
So
here we have a great then and now scenario. I am so glad to have
found the photo below. Thank you Edwin for taking it. It
appears to be a drone photo taken in February 2017.
