Photo of the Week
March 19, 2017

Continuing with our study of the Red, White and Blue Troupe of the Canal Zone this week.  Hold on we are going on rewind!  This whole Red, White and Blue Troupe study started eleven weeks ago and has progressed in a somewhat time frame advancement from the 1921 photo of Lona Rathbone to the late 1940's Gamboa photo from last week.  If you go back and look at the Lona Rathbone photo, you will see that Lona is standing in front of a palm tree, well here is that palm tree again, this time with a young Coach Grieser and three more RWBT swimmers.  If you look closely at the palm fronds, there isn't much, if any change.  The are all in the same position in both photos.  This leads me to believe that this may have been another press photo taken the same day or very close to the same day as the Lona Rathbone photo.  Both photos also have the white buildings in the background which I believe are houses on Tavernilla Street next to the Balboa pool.  Unfortunately I do not have the hard copy of this photo to see if there is any notations on the back like the Rathbone photo.  The best part of this photo is a chance to see the young coach when he first started his adventure with starting the Red, White and Blue Troupe.  Last week's photo from the late 1940s shows the much older Grieser with many years of Trouping under his belt.  I wonder if the young Grieser in today's photo ever imagined that this would go on for so long and touching so many lives along the way.  I have no idea who the three young ladies are in the photo, but that would be a whole other research project.

More next week.
