Photo of the Week

Many Zonian will remember the building shown in this photo.  The Cocoli VFW was a famous watering hole on the West Bank of the Canal near Miraflores Locks.  According to an old Panama Canal phone book this was VFW Post General George W. Goethals #3835.  It was located on the corner of Bruja and K-9 roads in Cocoli. I never knew that the post was named after the famous Panama Canal Engineer Goethals.  This is interesting.  There are some peoples memories quoted on the Internet that you can find by Goggling Cocoli VFW.  I frequented the old place when ever we ventured over to the West Bank to go down K-9 Road, out to Contractors Hill or the Miraflores terraces also known as the jumps as they used to have dirt bike competitions. The jumps were also referred to as the Submarine Races when you and your girl friend would park out there.  If you know what I mean...

I am sure that this old building is long gone now with the canal expansion right there now.

Long live the memories of our old Canal Zone.
