In continuing with aerial photos of the old Canal Zone, I found this one
in my collection of Gorgas Hospital. This undated 8 x 10 may have
been a Panama Canal Graphics Branch photo but has no identification
anywhere on the front or back. It is a really nice capture of most of
the original hospital property that was built in 1915 to replace the
original wood Ancon Hospital. It was named Gorgas Hospital in
1928. Gorgas Hospital is located on Ancon Hill. It was managed by the
U.S. Army for most of the 20th century but is now, in accordance with
the Torrijos-Carter Treaties (1977), in Panamanian hands. Since October
1999, it has been home to the Instituto Oncologico Nacional, Panama's
Ministry of Health, and its Supreme Court. Myself and many other Zonians
were born at this hospital. By zooming in on the automobiles, I
think this photo was taken in the 1960s. I don't know the date
that the new addition was added to the property (building on the far
left), but all the other buildings are the original hospital properties.
Long live our memories of
our Canal Zone home.
