Photo of the Week
May 16, 2004

This week's photo is a great one showing Locomotive 274 pulling a passenger train.  The gentleman with the bow tie is Max Englander and is the engineer on this locomotive.  The other unnamed gentleman is the conductor.  A relative of Max sent me this wonderful old photo and didn't really have too much more info on Max.  Locomotive 274 that was built by  American Locomotive, Cooke Works for the Isthmian Canal Commission was one of 100 locomotives of it's class.  They were purchased in 1906 for $11,307.00 each.  It may look familiar to you as it is the same class locomotive that Old 299 is.

A big salute to those early railroad men of the Panama Railroad.  May they not be forgotten.
