Photo of the Week
January 19, 2003

Okay folks we are going to revisit the old town of Chagres again this week.  Last week's photos sparked more interest from CZ Images contributor Andrew Frazer and he sent me some priceless old images. Among the photos Andrew sent include some great photos of Fort San Lorenzo as well.  I plan to put all these photos into a separate presentation in the near future.

This week's "Photos of the Week" first shows a wonderful old photo that was taken by one of the thatch / corrugated roofing hut in the town of Chagres. The people in the photo are on a Cristobal High School trip to San Lorenzo taken in 1917 or 18.  Andrew states "The mango tree behind the house looks an awful lot like the tree on the far right of the second post card in last week's presentation. On the right of the photo is the mount on which San Lorenzo is built."  Andrew added, "My aunt Janet (Fraser) Smith is one of the girls in these pictures. Currently at 102 years of age she lives at the Seminole Nursing Pavilion in Seminole, Florida."

I had to show this next black and white image of the town that Andrew sent which is similar to the colorized post card from last week, but is of another era.  It is probably an earlier view, estimated around 1911 where the colorized post card was taken after and is postmarked 1914.  This 1911 b/w card shows some of the huts being constructed and much of the vegetation is cut low.

This history stuff just gets better!!!
