Photo of the Week
4/5/2026

.

Back on 3/29/2026, I posted a photo of the Canal Zone Police, Gamboa Sub-Station in the 1940s. (click here)  Today's photo was taken in front of the modern times sub-station in Gamboa.  In this scene, shows the last Canal Zone Police Officers getting ready to close up and turn the duties over the the Panamanian Police.  As I mentioned on 3/29, the sign on the building was original sign made for the old sub-station.  When they closed shop there, the sign was taken down and cut in half lengthwise, taking sub-station off.  The new sub-station was just a small hole in the wall, part of the Maintenance Division shop.  There is the sign over the door.  Same sign, but modified as mentioned.

One night when all the craziness was going on with all things, big or small, that had Canal Zone written on it found new homes.  Below is the same sign that is shown in both last week's photo and this week's photo.  I personally didn't snatch the prize, but a good friend and he gave me the sign for my birthday.  I have held on to this historic sign all these years and it wll eventually go to the Panama Canal Museum at the University of Florida. I never knew the historic significance of the old sign until I ran across these two old photos.  The sign is safely kept in my house, out of the elements to preserve it for years to come.
