Another photo that was taken my Warren H. Smith, who was the Chief Safety Officer for the Canal Zone Governor back in the 50s thru 70s. Today's photo is one of kind. PRR 662, an EMD SW1200, built in 1962. It was one of 3 of this type of locomotive to run on the Panama Railroad. Although, designed for switchyard duties, these SW1200's were not a stranger to passenger duties, filling in when needed for the larger three PRRs Alco RSC3's They were equipped with cab communication signals for passenger operations and could attain the speed needed to keep those schedules. Their trucks were somewhat of an oddity and like all PRR equipment they were built to run on 5 foot gauge track. PRR had three of these EMD SW1200 locomotives 661 - 663 1200 Bo-Bo 1200hp. This
week's photo as I said is one of a king and fortunately Mr. Smith
happened to be at the Balboa Roundhouse this day to capture the
moment. Here is 662 pushing in a flat car with one of these
1200hp, 6 cylinder engines for another locomotive. Amazing photo
and capture in time. Long live the golden years of the Canal Zone.
