Photo of the Week
February 21, 2023

My brother scanned these old 35mm slides which have some priceless subject matter.  Here we have the causeway shore exposed what looks like a minus tide.  The off shore of these islands were anchorages for the old sailing and steam ships.  They would have to unload passengers and cargo onto smaller boats to be taken to Panama City.  The water depths in Panama Bay would not allow large ships.  This particular area of the causeway on the opposite side of the old Amador Officer's Beach was a gold mine for old relics and bottles.  Each year when the minus tides occurred, I would comb this area with my probe.  I found all kinds of relics that were either dumped or dropped over the side of one of these old ships.  There was even parts of old ships covered with copper sheeting.  If you look closely at the photo below, you can see all the relics on the beach.  Of course all this area and others off the shores have now been covered by fill widening the causeway and make marinas and cruise ship port.  So much history is being lost in the name of progress.

Long live our Canal Zone memories as they were back in the golden days!!!
