Photo of the Week
August 18, 2018

Continuing with the  Don Scheltmeyer's collection of 35mm slides again this week with more historic photos of Queen Elisabeth's stop in Panama and the Canal Zone on November 29, 1953.

Above is the queen's Royal Yacht S.S. Gothic entering the upper chamber of Gatun Locks on its way up to lake Gatun Lake.  The crowd gathers to see the queen, but she isn't on board as she is traveling over land this day.  Below is a good photo of  the Gothic still sitting in Gatun Locks.  The Gothic looks more like a commercial ship, which it was built for.  It was renovated or refitted very luxuriously in 1952 to become the Royal Yacht for her commonwealth tour of many countries ending in Australia and New Zealand.

I had posted a photo of the Royal Yacht Britannia back in 2017 and at that time thought the queen was using that vessel for her commonwealth tour, but found out just this week that the queen was in fact was on the S.S. Gothic when she came to Panama and not the Britannia.

There is a splash screen image at the bottom of this page.  Click on it and see a video of the queen's visit.  Note towards the end of the film, how the queen returns to the Gothic to finish her shore tour.

We have been fortunate to have so many photos of the 1953 Queen Elisabeth II visit to Panama here on the CZ Images website.  I think we are done for now unless some more pop up in the future.
