Photo of the Week
March 21, 2004

Is this picture backwards? Are we looking at a street scene in England?  Looks like Balboa to me, but the cars are on the wrong side of the street!!  Actually, people did drive on the opposite side of the street in the early Canal Zone days.  This was changed on April 15th, 1943.  This is a really great photo taken in Balboa in the early 1940's.  It is looking up the street towards the Commissary, Club House and First National City Bank.  Interesting is the building between the family quarters on the left and the bank.  I don't ever remember a building there in my lifetime.  I always knew that area as a parking lot for the bank.  Anyone out there know what this building was?  Note the two little kids standing by the side walk on the right looking at the photographer.

What a great old photo preserving the memories of our Canal Zone home.

Note from a CZ Images visitor: "Regarding the Picture of the Week, March 21, 2004, the building you ask about was the VFW. It was wood and is no more. The Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts used to have their monthly troop and pack meetings upstairs." Irwin Frank
